GPL Ada Compiler
Ada and Fortran have a lot in common. They are both workhorses of the
academic and scientific communities, and both get very little respect
from the masses of C++ and Java programmers.
There is a fantastic ada compiler, with built in editor and debugger
avalable for both Windows and Linux. They are built on on top of the
gnu toolchain by a commercial company, AdaCore. AdaCore is a fantastic
company, I highly recommend them when you have a need for gnat or general
ada expertise.
The compiler, debugger, and editor are distributed under the gpl. In the
spirit of the gpl, gfortran.org is providing these tools for download.
Also in the spirit (and also the letter) of the gpl, source code is also
provided in the same directory.
AdaCore says "We discourage their use in a professional context". The gpl
does not limit how you use the software but it does limit how you distribute
it. Please be sure you are cognizent of the gpl; including the licensing of
the runtime license used with the compiler. It is possible the run-time is
licensed under the gpl; which would require any code you distribute
compiled by the compiler to be distributed under a compatible license.
Don't trust any website. Check the source, and read the gpl.
With that out of the way, give them a whirl. The easier it is to use
ada, the more people will try it. And once you use ada for any non-trivial
effort, you will be impressed. Ada is what everyone would be using if we
were all smart enough to understand it's virtues. (unfortunately, it takes
a certain amount of maturity and experience to see the light).
